What laminate actually is

Laminate is a high-resolution photographic layer of real wood grain, sealed under a clear wear coat and pressed onto a dense fibreboard core. From standing height, it reads as the real thing — for a good deal less.

It's the most budget-friendly way to get a wood look in your home, and it earns its keep: the wear layer shrugs off scratches, dents and fading far better than raw timber. The planks click together edge-to-edge over an underlay — no nails, no glue, no drying time — so a room can go from bare to finished fast.

AC ratings.

Every laminate carries an AC (Abrasion Class) rating — a simple 1-to-5 scale for how much wear it can take. Match the rating to the room and you'll never pay for more floor than you need, or regret buying too little.

AC3
Residential

Built for the everyday home — living rooms, bedrooms and hallways with normal family traffic. The most common choice for houses.

AC4
Heavy residential · Light commercial

A step tougher for busy households with kids and pets, or a small shop or office. A safe pick for high-traffic spots.

AC5
Commercial

The hardest-wearing grade, made for shops, cafés and public spaces. More floor than a typical home needs — but there if you want it.

A quick note on water: some modern laminate is water-resistant and handles the odd spill if you wipe it up. For truly wet rooms — bathrooms, laundries, mudrooms — we'd steer you to luxury vinyl instead, which is fully waterproof.
